Hiring a Contractor

One of the most important elements of building with Trex® decking, railing or fencing is the right contractor. If you decide to hire one, we suggest you contact a few of them – and ask each potential contractor the following questions:

  • Have you built with Trex before?
  • How long have you been in business?
  • How many decks and/or fences have you built?
  • Do you have a business license?
  • Do you have the proper liability insurance?
  • Do you have references?
    • Most contractors will only give good references. When you call on their past clients, be sure to ask:
      • Would you hire them again?
      • Did you like their personality?
      • How did you get along?
      • Was the job completed to your satisfaction?

The contractor should give you a written estimate of how much the project will cost and about how long the project will take to complete. Make sure you ask about:

  • Construction details
  • Payment schedule
  • Drawings of the deck
  • Parking and delivery details
  • Utility repairs if necessary
  • Permits
  • Clean-up procedures
  • Contact information
