The Inspiration
All great designs start with inspiration. Brian Patrick Flynn, designer of HGTV® Dream Home 2023 shared with us his mindset, intentions, and inspiration for this space.
"A lot of the design choices were informed by the lifestyle that comes with Colorado. It's very active, and there are hiking trails just a few hundred feet from the house. So it's important that the house fits people who will really take advantage of the surroundings. I also wanted the house to be a great fit for pet owners as almost everyone you see in the neighborhood is out walking their dogs at different times of the day" shares Brian.
The liveable, low-maintenance outdoor living space featured on this year's HGTV® Dream Home reflects Flynn's visions from his color selections to layout.
Pro Tip: When designing your outdoor space, think about how you want to use the space. Does it need to be pet-friendly? What type of activities do you plan to use the space for? How long do you want to stay in this home? All of these questions should inform your deck design.

I think the Lineage decking is exactly what the back of the house needed. Something low maintenance and hard working so the space can just be enjoyed carefree any month of the year. And, I love the coloring of it with its gray tones against the sage green of the home's exterior.
Not only was this modern shade used for the decking, the boards were also used vertically to create a visually stunning cladding wall and wrapped the entire deck in the matching fascia for a seamless look.
Pro Tip: If the sides of your deck are visible from your yard, explore some fascia options to give your deck a polished look.
The Railing Look
Accenting this mangrove-inspired deck is aluminum rails in Charcoal Black. Signature® Rod Rail from the Trex collection brings the industrial look of a cable rail without the ongoing maintenance.
