Since he began working on HGTV® Dream Home in 2018, interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn has noticed a design movement toward simplicity. That trend is on display in big ways at HGTV® Dream Home 2022 with its neutral shades and pared down elegance.

“I think things lean toward being more practical and manageable,” Flynn said. “Low-maintenance rather than super formal or fancy.”

The impressive outdoor spaces at this year’s home fit right in. Created with low-maintenance, high-performance Trex products, the ground-level, open-air living room and two second-floor decks offer beauty, durability and easy care and neutral colors that seamlessly meld into the spectacular backdrop of the Mad River Valley in Warren, VT.

To complement the home’s contemporary design, Flynn chose low-maintenance Trex Transcend® decking in Spiced Rum for its burnt umber undertones. “Spiced Rum decking is a perfect fit for all four seasons in Vermont,” he said. “The warm undertones of the finish really come to life in fall when the leaves change to orange, yellow and red.”

Flynn took his inspiration for the modern mountain home’s overall design from Vermont’s iconic fall foliage and the ski community’s active lifestyle. “The house is nestled in the mountains with stunning views and I wanted the property to more or less fit in with its surroundings.”

Cue Trex Signature® railing with its glass infills and lighted post caps from the Trex® DeckLighting™ collection that keep the views front and center. “The seamless look of the glass railing is what drew me to it the most,” he said. “I love being able to see unobstructed views of the foliage from inside the house or from the decks.”

Trex® RainEscape® deck drainage system with its system of troughs and gutters that divert water away from the upper deck allowed for the first-floor open air living room. RainEscape shields the area below a deck from rain, snow and other harmful elements.

The 3-bedroom, 3 ½-bath home looks like multiple A frames grouped together. The jet black exterior siding pops out from the surroundings. Panoramic windows and sliding doors connect the interior to the outside which also features two fire pits, an outdoor kitchen and swimming pool.

The exterior color palette extends to the cool tones Flynn chose for the interior. The home’s walls, cabinets and furniture feature a striking black-brown, blue-grey and grey-green palette. Flynn expects that design element of the house to take off. “I think earthy greens used in larger ways like cabinets and walls will be something we’ll be seeing a lot of.”

Designing the house this fall as Vermont came alive with autumn was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the project, Flynn said.
