Trex Acquires Iron Deck®; Introduces Trex Elevations™

Steel Deck Framing System Offers Additional Opportunities for Profitability to Contractors

WINCHESTER, Va., May 2, 2011 – Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing products, today announced it has acquired substantially all of the assets of Iron Deck Corporation, a manufacturer of steel deck framing systems based in Denver. Trex will manufacture and market new Trex Elevations Steel Deck Framing – a system that offers the same combination of superior performance and aesthetics as Trex decking and railing products.

Trex Elevations will be manufactured of dual-coated, galvanized steel, which offers superior aesthetics, durability, longevity and stability when compared to traditional wood substructures. In addition, the product will not warp, twist, split or decay, allowing contractors to benefit from reduced callbacks and increased homeowner satisfaction. As the material is easy to cut and easy to build, it’s also more efficient and cost-effective for professionals to specify than pressure-treated lumber.

“The Trex name is already synonymous with high-performance outdoor living products, and this product line extension will allow us to continue gaining market share in the rapidly growing ultra low-maintenance category, while positioning our brand for strategic expansion into the $1.9 billion deck substructure market,” said Ron Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex. “Composite materials are increasingly taking share from wood decking and railing, and we see the same opportunity for significant market penetration against wooden deck substructures with the introduction of Trex Elevations.”

With its ability to prolong the life of a deck and improve its overall appearance, Trex Elevations will allow contractors to provide additional value to their customers’ outdoor living spaces, while creating incremental profits/increased profitability for the contractors. The system offers the additional guarantee of a 25-year limited warranty – surpassing pressure-treated lumber, which is chemically treated to resist decay for a maximum of 15 years. Trex Elevations materials also are composed of 25 percent recycled steel, and any excess materials from a jobsite are 100 percent recyclable.

“The combination of Iron Deck’s superior product technology and Trex’s high-performance decking and railing creates a strong value proposition in Trex Elevations for both consumers and our professional partners,” said Kaplan. “As the industry leader, we feel confident that Trex can drive overall awareness and acceptance of the wood-alternative deck substructure category.”

Trex will manufacture Trex Elevations Steel Deck Framing at its Fernley, Nevada, and Winchester, Virginia facilities.
