High-performance Trex Transcend® Decking and Railing and Trex Deck Lighting™ Recognized for Superior Product Design

WINCHESTER, Va., April 14, 2011 – Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, has won Design Journal’s 2011 Platinum Award for Design Excellence (ADEX) for both its revolutionary Trex Transcend decking and railing system and its energy-efficient Trex Deck Lighting. With a superior combination of performance and aesthetics, these products secured the program’s highest honor, which draws approximately 2,000 entries from 500 companies each year.

ADEX is the largest and most prestigious awards program that recognizes product design of furniture, fixtures and finishes marketed to the design trade. Products are judged by a panel of professionals representing a cross section of the design industry. The ADEX program is sponsored by Design Journal magazine, the international trade publication for interior designers, architects and facility managers.

Game Changing Decking and Railing
Designed to outperform wood, composite and PVC for decades, Transcend decking features a proprietary nine-element surface formulation that produces a natural, wood-like grain pattern with a lustrous satin finish that feels comfortable underfoot. Engineered with an exclusive low-sheen, high-traffic formulation, Transcend decking resists fading, staining, scratching and mold – and will not rot, warp, crack or splinter. Upkeep is hassle-free and requires no sanding, staining or painting.

Transcend decking features rich colors inspired by the great outdoors – including Tree House (light brown), Vintage Lantern (deep-burnished bronze), Fire Pit (spicy red) and Gravel Path (pristine grey). Two intense new tropical hues – Spiced Rum (warm, earthy umber) and Lava Rock (rich reddish-black hardwood streaking) – offer the look of tropical hardwoods, right down to the variation of color and streaking that makes exotic wood species unique. With the same beauty and low maintenance of Transcend decking, the completely modular Transcend railing system provides mix-and-match capabilities to suit the style of any home and homeowner. Available in a wide variety of color and style choices, Transcend railing components are offered in each of the four original Trex Transcend decking colors – as well as Charcoal Black and Classic White.

“With Trex Transcend decking and railing, we’ve elevated the entire outdoor living category through our design and manufacturing innovation, and we’ve created products that are unparalleled in terms of durability, wear-resistance and long-lasting good looks – all protected with an industry-leading 25-year warranty,” said Ron Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex. “The ADEX Platinum Award reinforces the positive consumer and professional feedback we’ve received on Transcend’s superior aesthetics since the collection debuted in early 2010.”

The Platinum ADEX Award is one of several industry honors recently bestowed on Trex Transcend. ProSales Magazine named the collection as a 2010 “Editor’s Choice” product, and Transcend was the only decking material to be recognized with Building Products magazine’s 2010 Most Valuable Product (MVP) Award, based on factors such as reduced installation time and labor costs, customer satisfaction, curb appeal and ability to add a “wow” factor to a home.

Long-Lasting DeckLighting
Energy-efficient Trex DeckLighting features sophisticated, understated silhouettes that provide improved ambience – as well as security – to an outdoor living space. The collection offers compact design for easy installation, and may be built into a new deck or retrofitted into an existing outdoor living space. Designed for use on posts, floors and steps – and compatible with all Trex post sleeves, as well as many other types of railing – LED-dimmable Trex Deck Lighting is available in a variety of styles and colors.

True to Trex’s environmentally friendly heritage, each lighting option operates for up to 40,000 hours of life and surpasses traditional incandescent lighting by using 75 percent less energy and eliminating worry of voltage drops. In addition, the low-voltage lights are extremely durable, as well as weather-proof and salt-air resistant – ensuring that they will retain a “like new” appearance for years to come.

“With Trex Deck Lighting, we’ve combined our commitment to performance, aesthetics and eco-consciousness,” said Kaplan. “The new collection has allowed us both to expand Trex’s brand presence throughout the outdoor living arena and create greater flexibility and design options for our consumers.”

Trex Transcend decking and railing and Trex Deck Lighting will be featured in the June 2011 issue of Design Journal and on the magazine’s website at designjournalmag.com.
