Trex Honored For Manufacturing "Greenest" Decking
Green Builder Media’s 2013 Reader’s Choice Awards Name Trex First in Eco-friendliness
WINCHESTER, Va., February 22, 2013 – Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, recently took top honors in the decking products category of Green Builder Media’s 2013 Reader’s Choice Awards. More than 40 percent of readers who voted selected Trex® decking as the “greenest” in the industry.
The entire high-performance Trex decking portfolio – including Trex Transcend®, Trex Enhance® and Trex Select® – is manufactured from more than 95 percent recycled content, including reclaimed wood and sawdust, as well as plastic from many common household items – such as case overwraps, sandwich/bread bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags and grocery/retail bags.
“Being recognized as the decking industry’s ‘green’ leader once again this year reaffirms our ongoing commitment to set the standard for eco-friendly outdoor living products,” said Ronald W. Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex. “Respect for the environment is a way of life at Trex, and we feel a responsibility to manufacture products that both help to preserve the outdoors – and make them more enjoyable.”
Built on green principles and values, Trex products offer a truly environmentally responsible choice to consumers. Trex salvages and keeps more than 400 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills each year. In addition, the company’s manufacturing process is as green as its final product, with a proprietary processing method that eliminates smokestacks and factory refuse that is recycled back into the manufacturing line.
Trex also regularly seeks third-party audits to ensure that it is continually improving green practices while meeting all environmental, health and safety guidelines and industry regulations. Trex is the first company in the wood-alternative decking industry to receive an International Code Council Evaluation Service® (ICC-ES)* SAVE Verification for Recycled Content.
On a community level, Trex is an advocate of recycling initiatives and environmental education. The company’s Plastic Bag Challenge encourages grade schools to collect plastic bags and other plastic packaging in return for products (benches, birdhouses, etc.) made of Trex wood-alternative materials.
The March issue of Green Builder magazine will include comprehensive data from the 2013 Reader’s Choice Awards. Green Builder Media is the leading North American company in the residential building industry focused on green building and responsible growth. It provides information that inspires a commitment to sustainable living.
