Web-based Program Simplifies Estimates for Deck Material Costs

WINCHESTER, Va., May 7, 2015 – Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, is launching a new Cost Calculator on Trex.com, making it easier for consumers to plan and budget for building a new outdoor living space. A first for the composite decking industry, the Trex Cost Calculator estimates the material costs for a deck build based on customer’s inputs for the size, substructure, decking, and railing products being considered.

“Planning a new outdoor living space can be a major undertaking and one of the first questions a homeowner asks is ‘What will it cost?’” said Ronald W. Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex. “The Trex Cost Calculator offers valuable guidance to consumers in the early stages of planning to help them make informed decisions about their outdoor living projects, and addresses the all-important cost question up front so that consumers can feel confident in their choices.”

Specifically developed to provide an intuitive and user-friendly experience, the Trex Cost Calculator guides users through four simple steps:

1. Deck Size – Using a diagram with sliding scales, users can directly insert the dimensions of their desired deck, either in feet or meters, for any size up to 1,500 square feet (136 square meters).

2. Substructure – A deck’s substructure is an often-overlooked, but critical, component when planning for a new deck. With the Trex Cost Calculator, users have the option of selecting an existing substructure, a new wood frame, or Trex Elevations® steel deck framing system for their project. The tool automatically calculates the material cost for each option, taking into consideration the deck size and configuration.

3. Decking – Users then have the option to select from Trex’s three high-performance decking collections: Trex Select®, Trex Enhance®, and Trex Transcend®.

4. Railing – As a final step, users can choose to add any of Trex’s railing collections - Trex Select®, Trex Reveal®, or Trex Transcend® - to their project and estimate.

Once complete, the Cost Calculator provides a realistic cost estimate for the Trex materials based on the chosen selections. It then provides the option to send users an email with itemized costs for substructure, decking, and railing. Users can also reinsert various combinations of options to determine how a different deck size or materials may impact potential costs.

“Material costs are a common denominator whether you plan to build a deck yourself or work with a professional contractor,” explained Kaplan. “The Trex Cost Calculator provides homeowners with a realistic basis for budgeting and comparing Trex products to other decking materials.”
