Deck Lighting FAQs

Can I install my own deck lights?

Yes. The system is designed to be installed during the deck construction process, with underrail lights integrated into the railing assembly during installation. This makes it a great option for DIYers as well as professional installers, while ensuring the lighting is properly positioned and concealed within the finished railing system. For people looking to add lighting to their deck after a build or to an existing deck, post cap lights and riser lights are able to be added later.

Can you put lights in composite decking?

Yes! Trex Lighting is designed to integrate with Trex Decking and Trex Railing systems. Riser Lights are specifically designed for installation on Trex stairs, making it easy to add illumination throughout your outdoor living space.

How do I light my deck at night?

There are a number of ways to light your deck at night. The first would be simply to plug your transformer into your outlet. If you’re looking for a more hands-free approach – use the photocell timer provided with your transformer. This photocell timer has multiple options including setting your lights to illuminate from dusk until dawn, or to be on for two, four, or up to 10 hours. Another way to light your deck at night would be to use our remote controlled dimmer. The new remote controlled dimmer allows you to control your lights with the click of a button.

How much does it cost to install deck lights?

Trex® Lighting is a premium outdoor living enhancement designed to add beauty, ambiance, and functionality to your deck. The total cost will vary depending on the type and number of lights selected, as well as any required accessories such as wiring, splitters, transformers, and timers. Contact your local Trex retailer or installer for a project-specific estimate.

Is Trex deck lighting worth it?

Yes, Trex® Lighting is the finishing touch that makes it all come together–completing the space, elevating every evening, and making the investment unmistakably worthwhile. In addition, our lights and transformers come with a five-year warranty, giving homeowners peace of mind.

What is the best lighting for a deck?

The best deck lighting depends on your space and how you use it. Trex® Lighting offers several options to help create an inviting outdoor environment. Post Cap Lights add a warm glow to deck posts and perimeter areas, while Oval Riser Lights and Linear Riser Lights help illuminate stairs for improved visibility. For a clean, modern look, Under Rail Lights provide subtle accent lighting beneath the railing. Combining multiple lighting styles can create a layered lighting effect that enhances both safety and ambiance.

Are Trex deck lights low voltage?

Yes. Trex® Lighting products operate on a 24-volt low-voltage system, compared to the 120-volt electrical service typically used in homes. Low-voltage lighting can simplify installation and is commonly used for outdoor lighting applications. Trex® Lighting products also utilize LED technology, which is more energy efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs while providing ambient illumination for your outdoor living space.

What is the best color for deck lights?

The best outdoor lighting doesn’t call attention to itself. It works quietly in the background, bringing out the warmth of the space, softening every edge and making your deck feel just as inviting after dark. Warm light creates a softer, more inviting atmosphere. It brings out the natural character of your deck, complements the materials and makes the transition from day to night feel effortless.

Where to put lights on a deck?

The best deck lighting plan combines safety and ambiance. Consider illuminating key areas such as stairs, posts, and railings to improve visibility while highlighting your deck's design.

For the best effect, combine multiple lighting types to create layered lighting that enhances both the beauty and functionality of your deck.
