Cable Deck Railing FAQs

Have questions about other products? Check out our FAQ page.

01
Can I retrofit cable railing on an existing wood deck?

Yes, you can. Trex Signature® X-Series™ Cable Railing must be installed with Trex Signature® X-Series™ anchor posts. Be sure to follow Trex installation guidelines when replacing existing posts with X-Series anchor posts.

02
Do Trex cable railing kits meet building code?

Trex Signature® X-Series™ Cable Railing kits are designed to meet the latest building code requirements. Always check with your local building official, as requirements may vary by region. Learn more about compliance details here.

03
Does cable railing rust?

Trex Signature® X-Series™ Cable Railing cables and hardware are made from stainless steel, designed to work seamlessly with our powder-coated aluminum anchor posts. This durable combination resists rust, even in harsh environments. To prevent cosmetic rust, follow Trex care and cleaning guides.

04
How tight should cable deck railing be?

When installing Trex Signature® X-Series™ Cable Railing, each cable should be tensioned to 100 lbs. using the included wrench (one per kit). Cables should be hand-tightened before final tensioning. Make sure to use a cable tension gauge for best results.

05
What maintenance does stainless steel cable need?

Trex’s stainless steel spring-loaded cables are designed to maintain consistent tension over time, reducing ongoing maintenance. The push-to-connect system requires no swaging or crimping, making installation quick and easy. Periodic cleaning with soap and water is recommended to maintain appearance, especially in coastal areas.
