Meet the Berson Family. Proud parents of four boys, Bill and his wife are no strangers to the wild, messy, and wonderful life that comes with raising children. It’s no surprise that after relocating to Virginia, creating a low-maintenance outdoor space became a priority for the family. We recently had the opportunity to chat with Bill and his youngest son, Finn, about their new outdoor space. Spoiler alert: They love their Trex deck. Bill shares, "What I love most about Trex is that it's beautiful and worry-free."
After years of staining and maintaining a wood deck at their previous home, the Berson family was ready for a change. With their new home under construction, it was the perfect opportunity to upgrade their outdoor space to composite. Trex® was the first brand they considered when they began designing their dream outdoor space.
"Bottom line, I came here to work for Trex; but in all reality, I would have chosen Trex decking either way," shares Bill. For the Berson family, their decking selection was all about color.
Our vision for our outdoor space is something that feels like we are on vacation all the time."
Opting for the salty grey hue of Foggy Wharf decking, they did just that. "It [Trex Enhance® decking in Foggy Wharf] gives you the feeling of a vacation home which is what we wanted the space to feel like," Bill chimed in.
Keeping with the vacation vibe, the Bersons knew they needed a low-maintenance solution that would allow them to spend time enjoying their outdoor space, not maintaining it.
I love this deck because all I have to do is rinse it off. It doesn't have splinters. It doesn't rot. If it gets really dirty, I just take a power washer to it and it looks like the day we moved in."
Pairing a classic white and black railing with the modern, neutral shades of the decking, the family created a calm and restorative color palette to extend the beach house feel.
Understated railing lights add wayfinding and ambiance to the space as the sun sets. "It [Trex Post Cap Lights] glows enough that you aren't tripping as you are walking around the deck and it is still subtle enough that you can enjoy the night sky." explained Bill.
While a deck sets the stage for outdoor living, a well-designed one fades into the background and allows your memories to take center stage. We asked Bill and Finn to share some of their favorite memories on their deck so far.
For Bill, the memory of his two eldest sons' first visit to the new family home sticks out among the rest. After entering the home from the back deck to add to the surprise factor of their visit, the whole family settled into the outdoor space for an evening filled with good food, laughter, and togetherness.
Move-in day is what Finn found most memorable. After a long day of unpacking boxes, the family gathered in the outdoor space to unwind and relax surrounded by nature and their dogs.
What's next for the Berson family? "We have a lot of additional renovations planned," Bill shares. For the outdoor space, a new storage area below the deck, and a patio around the fire pit area are in the works. In terms of using the outdoor space, BBQ's with family and friends, morning coffee breaks, and dinners under the stars are definitely in the plans.
