Refined living and sustainability are at the heart of HGTV® Smart Home 2021. From the latest technology and stylish organization solutions to eco-friendly materials, designer Tiffany Brooks considered every detail an opportunity to redefine what it means to “live smart.”

Brooks, HGTV's Smart Home’s long-time designer, set out to fashion a retreat-style oasis with a hint of luxury at the Naples, FL, home that sits adjacent to private fairways with lake and golf course views. The outdoor space focuses on dining, entertaining and enjoying Florida’s enviable weather suitable for year-round outdoor living. “I love this location,” Brooks said. “I’m obsessed with how this is all on one level. It’s super open and airy. The amount of natural light in this house is unmatched.”

Large folding glass doors leading onto the lanai and deck invite seamless indoor-outdoor living, connecting the home’s interior with the extraordinary backyard deck made from Trex decking, railing, lighting, pergola and kitchen. Combined, the Trex products play nicely with the home’s stucco exterior, Brooks said.

“The richness and undertones of golden reds look amazing next to the color green that I picked for the house.”

Trex Transcend® Havana Gold decking, with its blend of caramel and honey tones, and Signature® Rod Rail aluminum railing in Charcoal Black, also coordinate with the home’s java-colored concrete tile roof while accentuating Florida’s light.

More than just exceptional style, weather-resistant Trex deck boards deliver on the look of wood without the hassle of burdensome upkeep. Engineered to resist fading, staining, scratching and mold, our decking collections won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter, adding to the hassle-free living one expects from HGTV® Smart Home.

Adding to its appeal, Transcend decking is made from 95% recycled material, including reclaimed wood scraps and sawdust, as well as plastic film.

Our sleek yet sturdy Signature railing frames the deck while allowing for unobstructed views. The contemporary railing line combines the strength of powder-coated aluminum with unobtrusive horizontal balusters that maximize the beauty of the backyard and beyond.

“That railing added that classic modern touch that I was looking for,” Brooks said.

Replicating the clean lines and modern looks found in today’s upscale restaurants and resorts, Signature offers low maintenance and durability with on-trend, industrial flair. Staying true to Trex’s commitment to sustainability, Signature is made from more than 50 percent recycled aluminum and is 100 percent recyclable.

Providing a “wow” moment, a Trex® Pergola™ Shadow aluminum shade structure, with a rich metallic bronze finish, sits in the middle of the deck. The medium bronze pergola, with a shade of geometric patterns, not only adds architectural interest, but also creates the look and feel of a separate outdoor room while providing protection from the Florida sun. The 12x12 structure is accented with LED lights in the beams to create a relaxing atmosphere as the sun goes down.

The Shadow collection comes in a variety of panel patterns that provide varying degrees of openness, allowing homeowners to choose the perfect amount of shade. Trex pergolas require minimal maintenance and never rot, warp, split or fade. Pergola kits come in a wide range of standard sizes and include all the pre-cut components and hardware necessary, making installation a snap.

“I love that I was able to customize the paneling of the top of the pergola,” Brooks said. “It adds a layer of interest that makes the structure feel very custom.”

Choosing a Trex® Outdoor Kitchen™ in the rich color of Tardis Blue was no accident. Brooks “wanted a reference to the teal water tones of the nearby Florida coast,” she said.

The well-equipped kitchen features a stainless outdoor fridge, storage cabinets, five-burner gas grill and a gas-powered table-top pizza oven that produces a tasty pie in just 60 seconds. A 55-inch wall-mounted smart TV featuring anti-reflection technology, ceiling fans, solar-powered skylights with built-in rain sensors, and an all-weather, aluminum dining table for six, amp the comfort level of this gathering spot.

Recessed deck lights from the Trex® Deck Lighting™ collection were installed flush on the deck boards to not only add a safety feature to the outdoor space, but also to enhance the ambiance and sustainability factor. The light fixtures blend in with the decking for a clean look, also extending use of the backyard space well into night. The “plug-and-play” components are cool to the touch, easy to install and the energy-efficient, low-voltage lights are durable, weather-proof and salt-air resistant.

While the exterior features mostly neutral tones, the HGTV Smart Home 2021’s interior takes its cues directly from the blue waters of the coast. Color, Brooks said, is a key element to making a house a home.

“It sets the tone and the underlying mood of the entire design. It is the most powerful tool a designer has in their toolbox.”
